Welcome to the Webpage of QuinnTon
QuinnTon is a female choir in Vasa consisting of about fourty happy song-loving women of different ages. The choir is active within Vasa arbis adult education centre. The choir gets to use the premises of the centre for rehearsals. The choir has been a registered association since 2008.
QuinnTon was founded in 1985 on the initiative of Noomi Elfving, who has been the conductor of the choir ever since the beginning. Noomi works as a music teacher at Vasa arbis adult education centre, where conducting QuinnTon is part of her job.
Johanna Törni is the choir’s vice conductor.
QuinnTon has a varied repertoire, with a certain emphasis on swingy music.
The choir sings everything from pop songs and newly written music to folksongs, hymns and classical music by both Finnish and foreign composers.
The choir always performs without sheet music. Some of the songs are performed with choreography.
Many of the songs can be found in the music books published by the Finn-Swedish Female Choirs Association: ”Damernas fyra” – Christmas carols, ”Damernas 5:a” – drinking songs and ”Damernas Sväng 6:a” – swingy music from the whole world.
Every year QuinnTon usually gives an advent and a spring concert, often with the sister choirs in Vasa arbis, i.e. the song group Nonen and SilverQuinns (singers ageing 60+).
QuinnTon also co-operates with musicians, soloists and other choirs in and outside of Vasa.
It is also a tradition to participate in the annual party at the local home for the elderly, Fylgia, on a Monday evening in October or November each year.
The choirs also performs at various events and parties arranged by Vasa arbis and at concerts with other choirs within the Song and Music Association of the Vasa Region or within the Finnish Female Choirs Association.
Occasionally the choir goes on tour within Finland or abroad.
The weekly rehearsals of the choir are on Mondays between 7.15 and 9 p.m. in the music room at Vasa arbis.
The choir also gathers for choir days at Vasa arbis (usually for a Saturday during the autumn term) and for a choir camp (Friday evening to Saturday during the spring term) usually at a course centre outside town.
The choir has its own board elected at the annual meeting in the spring. The board plans and works with all the practical arrangements for the activities of the choir.
The board during 2008-2010: Lisbeth Rosenback (chairwoman), Benita Yrjans (vice chairwoman), Vivan Lygdbäck (secreteray), Febe Mörk (treasurer), Mikaela Ångerman (information officer), Noomi Elfving (conductor), Johanna Törni (viceconductor), Carita Jakobsson och Birgitta Lieskoski (board members).
The Music Committee is responsible for the musical guidelines in co-operation with the conductor.
The board and the Music Committee aside there are a few other committees within QuinnTon. The aim is that each singer should belong to a committee to make everyone involved and able to influence the activities of the choir. The actual singin aside there are a lot of practical things to organize – trips, concert preparations, lotteries, serving, applications for funds etc.
QuinnTon is a member of the local Song and Music Association of the Vasa Region (VSMF) and in the Finn-Swedish Female Choir Association (FSD). Noomi Elfving is also the conductor of the Finn-Swedish Female Choir Association, a special association within the umbrella organization The Finn-Swedish Song and Music Association (FSSMF).
